THIS female selling season Landmark has added a new sale to its already highly successful breeder sales calendar.
The sale is the Landmark Gingin/Mid West Cattle Breeders Premium Heifer Sale but unlike the other Landmark female sales it won’t be held in a set of yards as it will be on AuctionsPlus.
The sale is scheduled for Wednesday, February 27, 2019, the day before the annual Gingin Bull Sale and is aimed at catering for breeding heifers located north of Perth.
In the sale the Landmark team’s aim is to offer a select line-up of between 250 to 300 heifers from vendors based in Gingin through to Northampton and east to Wongan Hills.
Along with coming from a range of environments there will also be a good range of breeds on offer in the sale with Angus, Murray Grey and Santa Gertrudis heifers having already been nominated.
Landmark Mid West livestock manager Mitchell Braithwaite said the aim of the sale is to promote the region’s better bred cattle whose genetics are based mainly on studs which sell at the Gingin Bull Sale.
“By exposing these quality female herds to the market, we are also hoping it will increase activity and support at the Gingin Bull Sale,” Mr Braithwaite said.
“The sale will also give producers north of Perth an opportunity to sell their females to a wider buying base and we are confident these females from the Mid West and Central Midlands regions will perform across the State.
“The sale will give South West restockers the opportunity to buy breeders from these regions which in the past they may not have known about or had access to.”
In terms of numbers, Mr Braithwaite said their aim is to put forward a select offering of about 250 to 300 heifers in this inaugural sale and grow the sale in coming years.
“We are still calling for nominations but at this stage we have Angus, Murray Grey and Santa Gertrudis heifers nominated,” he said.
“All the heifers in the sale will have been dropped in 2018 and they will be of size to join in the 2019 mating period.”
One of the most northern vendors in the sale will be Tony and Liz Sudlow and family, Kapari Angus stud, Northampton.
The Sudlows have nominated a small line of purebred Angus heifers, which are out of their stud herd and surplus to requirements.
With 40 years of breeding behind them in the tougher conditions of the north, their easy-doing characteristics will make these well-grown heifers a must have item.
When breeding their females the Sudlows aim for a moderate-framed female with good doing ability and easy fleshing characteristics.
The April/May 2018-drop, non-transferable heifers which will be offered by the Sudlows are sired by leading AI and Kapari sires and will be yard weaned in early December.
Also in from the Mid West region will be a small specially selected line of Angus heifers from Peter, Celine and Brad Kupsch, Black Tara Angus stud, Allanooka.
The Kupschs aim to breed an Angus female which is thick, moderate framed, easy-doing and fertile with a good temperament.
The heifers, which were dropped in March and April, are from the Kupsch’s J-BAS8 accredited stud herd and surplus to requirements.
They will be sired by a mix of leading AI sires including Chisum and Te Mania Emperor, along with homebred Black Tara sires.
The heifers will be weaned along with the rest of the Kupsch’s 2018-drop calves at the end of December.
Prior to sale they will be ear notch tested BVDV free and receive their second 7in1 treatment, Multimin and a backline drench.

Brothers John and Leon Stickland and family, Mungatta Murray Grey stud, Wongan Hills, will offer 20 Murray Grey yearling heifers at the sale.
The unjoined heifers are out of stud Mungatta Murray Grey cows and will be mostly by naturally joined sires and some AI bred.
Pedigrees will be known closer to the sale following selection.
While the heifers are out of stud cows, they will be offered as unjoined commercial heifers and will be drenched when moved onto stubbles following harvest.
Gingin locals Alan, Margaret and Sean Greenwell will offer a quality line of 60 females from their 400 head Angus breeding herd.
The May to July drop heifers are sired by Koojan Hills and Ardcairnie Angus bulls and due to be weaned in mid-January.
They have been given B12 and Multimin and will be vaccinated prior to sale with 7in1 and for Vibrio and pestivirus.
From the Chittering region, Wendalla Santa Gertrudis stud will offer a line of females from its J-BAS8 accredited herd.
Stud principal Wendy Gould said the heifers, by Bullamakinka High Expectation M178 (P) and Gyranda J204 (PS), would reflect breeding emphasis of easy doing-ability, good temperament and sound structure and carry rapid weight gain traits for which the Santa Gertrudis breed is renowned.
The heifers will be vaccinated, backlined and ready for a 2019 joining program.
