THERE will be plenty of quality weaners up for grabs when the Primaries teams hosts a weaner sale at the Muchea Livestock Centre next Friday in conjunction with S & C Livestock.
In the sale set for Friday, December 14, the Primaries livestock team is expecting to yard close to 600 weaners which will feature breeds including Angus, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Simmental, Red Angus, Murray Grey, Blonde d’Aquitaine and Charolais.
Primaries Midlands agent and sale co-ordinator Rhys Hebberman said the calves on offer in the sale had been hand selected especially for the fixture.
“We are trying to make this an annual blue ribbon sale for calves bred in the Midlands and Central Midlands areas,” Mr Hebberman said.
“There will be a wide range of weights in the calves meaning there will something to suit all buyers from breeders to backgrounders and lotfeeders.
“Among the heifer run there will be a number of lines of genuine heifers which will be suitable as future breeders.”
One of the biggest vendors in the sale will be George and Sally Gifford, GA & SA Gifford, Gingin.
The Giffords offering will comprise of 80 Angus weaners (60 steers and 20 heifers) based on Blackrock and Little Meadows Angus bloodlines.
Mr Hebberman said the Giffords calves were extremely well-bred as the Giffords have been buying the best genetics for years.
“Their calves are well-known to perform on feed and when it comes to the heifers on offer they are certainly of outstanding quality and show plenty of potential to be top breeders in the future,” he said.
The line of calves will be weaned and is expected to average 320 kilograms.
Another big vendor of Angus calves will be Sunblade Holdings, Bolgart.
The Bolgart operation has nominated 100 heifers, based on Diamond Tree/Gandy and Koojan Hills Angus bloodlines.
The heifers are weaned and will weigh between 250-300kg.
Also offering 100 calves in the sale will be Riverwind, Gingin.
The Gingin operation, which spares no expense on genetics, has nominated 100 Angus and Shorthorn-Angus cross weaners (50 steers and 50 heifers).
The calves are out of Angus cows carrying Kapari bloodlines and sired by high performance Angus and Shorthorn bulls.
Mr Hebberman said the Riverwind calves in the past were highly sought after by lotfeeders due to their high performance on feed.
“In terms of the heifers they are not normally available to the market and this drop certainly show the class to be potential breeders,” he said.
The line from Riverwind will weigh from 290-350kg.
Woottating operation AMB Consolidated Pty Ltd will also feature with purebred Angus weaners when it trucks in 30 weaned steers, which will weigh about 320kg.
The calves from AMB Consolidated will impress with their stretch and grunt.
They are known to perform well on feed.
From Coorow will be 50 heifers which are of nearly pure Angus breeding from Rudd Family Trust.
The line is based on Diamond Tree/Gandy and Koojan Hills Angus bloodlines.
Mr Hebberman said as the line had come out of a drier area, the calves were lighter in weight but would be ideal backgrounding type females.
The line is expected to average 230kg.
Also offering a sizeable run of calves will be Bush & Co, Lower Chittering, which has nominated 40 Angus cross (30 steers and 10 heifers).
The calves are based on Kapari Angus bloodlines and with their weights about the 310kg mark, will make ideal lotfeeding cattle.
For buyers looking for something that isn’t black, then 40 Poll Hereford-Simmental cross heifers from I & J McKay, Three Springs, could be ideal.
The weaned heifers are based on Terraneil Poll Hereford and Bullock Hills Simmental bloodlines.
Mr Hebberman said the McKays usually retained their heifers and feed them on-farm with good results.

“This line will also present an opportunity to buy some outstanding heifers which show potential to be future breeders,” he said.
The line will average about 280kg.
Another non-black line to impress will be 30 weaned Charolais (15 steers and 15 heifers) from the Estate of LI Millner, Wooroloo.
The calves are based on the operation’s own Downunder Charolais bloodlines and are expected to average 310kg.
Stud registration is available on the heifers at the buyers cost.
