Boyanup weaner sale makes $1.747m gross

But this was misplaced as the sale, due both to the quality and effort by agents, was a great success.

Overall end results achieved a sale gross of $1.747 million with the average breaking the $1000 bracket to finish at $1002.

The average was more than $100 up on the previous two special weaner sales held at Boyanup.

Steer calves sold to $1247 and 340c/kg while heifers topped at $1109 and 318c/kg.

Buying support was spread between live export, lotfeeders, agents and local graziers, with all buying numbers.

Treeton Lake opened the sale with a pen of 12 Angus steers weighing 413 kilograms that went to GJ & J Watt, Treeton, for $1238 and 300c/kg, to start the sale well.

Landmark Margaret River agent Jock Embry took the next two pens from Treeton Lake, paying $1220 and $1179 at 308c/kg and 312c/kg for the two pens.

South West Pastoral, which had sold at a past sale, offered similar quality again with the first pen weighing 417kg going to Semini Enterprises at $1209 and 290c/kg.

Another 13 joined those at 298c/kg to cost $1163, while three in the pen from DJ Cabassi made $1197 at 298c/kg.

The top price of $1247 was paid for seven Angus, sold account MI Vuletic when GJ & J Watt bid to 278c/kg for the 448kg steers.

Mr Watt soon added a line of 11 Limousin cross calves weighing 401kg from RJ & M Della Sale, costing $1204 at 300c/kg.

The first of the Charolais steers were from BJ Jackson, McAlinden and these sold to Mr Watt for $1195 and 294c/kg.

Rodney Galati, Brunswick, was again a force to be reckoned with, buying for Galati Family Trust and Livestock Shipping Services (LSS).

A line of 14 from Newburn Grazing cost $1146 at 318c/kg, followed by 11 sold by C & C Minson, with these 341kg steers selling for $1098 and 322c/kg.

An earlier pen of Minson steers went to Semini Enterprises at $1157 when the 378kg cattle sold at 306c/kg.

At this point of the sale, LSS purchased 12 of the 13 pens sold.

This included a top of $1185 at 326c/kg for eight Limousin steers from GW Clifford.

Landmark Waroona agent Richard Pollock also bought a pen of the Clifford steers weighing 363kg that cost $1125 at 310c/kg.

The best of the Kelly-Brae steers weighed 411kg were snapped up by Mr Embry for $1194 at 290c/kg.

A second run of Treeton Lake steers sold to 324c/kg, bought by Errol Gardiner, Landmark Brunswick, who also paid the same for a pen of 10 sold account GD Muir & Co, with the top for these making $1185.

Limousin steers from Jay C Higgins, Donnybrook, appealed to Larry Maiolo, who paid $1197 for 10 weighing 394kg at 304c/kg and another three for $1175 and 300c/kg.

E & C Russell, Bridgetown, sold two pens of Angus weighing 373kg and 352kg, with both going to Mr Embry for $1164 and $1086.

The top of 340c/kg was paid for 12 weighing 325kg from Treeton Lake, costing Mr Gardiner, $1105.

Later Mr Embry paid 340c/kg also for 13 of the Treeton Lake steers weighing 290kg to cost $986.

The top price in the heifer section was split when 11 Charolais weighing 390kg from BJ Jackson were bought by GJ & J Watt at 284c/kg to cost $1109, then later in the sale two Limousin from Jay C Higgins were bought by Mr Pollock for $1109, with the 360kg heifers selling at 308c/kg.

The next pen of heifers from JC & CL Higgins took the top in cents a kilo when LSS bid to 318c/kg for the 328kg cattle to cost $1043.

Ten Charolais heifers from C & C Minson attracted strong interest before selling to LSS at $1061 when the 347kg heifers made 306c/kg.

The next pen sold to Harris Beef Enterprises for $1003 at 310c/kg.

Mr Embry added 10 Limousin cross heifers averaging 357kg from RJ & M Della Sale to his earlier purchases to cost $1015 and 284c/kg.

Also going to the bid of Mr Galati for LSS were 10 heifers weighing 342kg from GW & AP Clifford, with these returning $1087 at 318c/kg.

Later in the sale another 12 Clifford heifers made $1019 when the 351kg females sold at 290c/kg, being one of the many pens knocked down to Mr Pollock.

Howard Griffiths selected a couple of pens of Angus heifers suitable for future breeders, paying 290c/kg and $943 for 14 weighing 325kg from Jennifer Colum, before adding six sold account Deep Gully Grazing for 292c/kg and $932.

While the buying gallery thinned considerably toward the end of the heifers, enough genuine bidders remained to keep values to at least recent levels for lighter cattle.

LANDMARK South West livestock manager Matt Watts said once again, the cattle on offer in the sale were all class and quality could not be faulted.

“A mixture of European and British bred weaners were presented to a strong line-up of buyers, representing the live export, feedlot and grass feeding sectors,” Mr Watts said.

“The steer market, saw heavy weaners more than 330kg remain firm, while those less than 330kg eased by 5-10c/kg on our previous weaner sale.

“The heifer yarding was well supported for the European bred cattle with these drafts of heifers in the 280-350kg sector receiving added competition from the live export sector to see values consistently over 290c/kg and top at 318c/kg.

“This represented an increase on the previous weaner sales market by 5-8c/kg.

“Lightweight heifers less than 280kg met reduced markets with most sales between 240-280c/kg, to be 5-10c/kg back on the last sale.
