AFTER last month’s Elders Boyanup Supreme Springing heifer sale, the focus for Elders has shifted to its unjoined first-cross heifer offering at Boyanup this week.
The first-cross, unjoined heifer and store sale on Friday, January 11, will be a must for producers looking for replacements for this year’s mating program.
On offer in the unjoined heifer section of the sale will be 300 quality first-cross, unmated, bucket-reared females, which all come highly recommended.
The sale, which will feature 1000 head all up, is set to start at 1.30pm.
Elders South West livestock manager Michael Carroll said the January store sale is the perfect sale to secure cattle especially if you are in the market for unjoined, first-cross heifers with these being the feature of this sale.
“We have a very good yarding of store cattle coming in for the first Elders store sale of 2019,” Mr Carroll said.
“This month we will be featuring 300 first-cross heifers, which are mostly owner-bred and will suit breeders or growers looking for replacements.
“The entire line-up of the first-cross heifers are bucket reared, vet checked and guaranteed unmated and fit to breed, meaning buyers can select these with confidence.
“We will also have the usual quality line-up of dairy steers of both liveweight and appraisal on offer and also an outstanding herd dispersal line-up of Angus cows.
Angus-Friesian first-cross heifers will make up the majority of the first-cross heifer yarding, which will range in age from six to 20 months.
Along with the Angus-Friesian heifers there will also be a small number of Murray Grey-Friesian, Hereford-Friesian and Murray Grey-Aussie Red heifers on offer from the 16 vendors featuring in the first-cross heifer run.
The annual selected drafts of first-cross, unjoined females, will come from mainly the Harvey and Brunswick areas and have been inspected by members of the Elders South West livestock team for quality and soundness.
Not only will the quality be unquestionable so to will be the future breeding status of the heifers as each heifer has been vet-checked as guaranteed unmated and fit to breed.
Elders Brunswick/Harvey representative Alex Roberts said close to 300 unjoined heifers would be offered, giving buyers the opportunity to select from a quality line-up.
“We have been through the heifers nominated for the sale and are very pleased with the quality of the offering,” Mr Roberts said.
“The offering will come from a number of regular vendors and all the heifers are in good condition and are credit to the vendors.”
Offering one of the largest draft of Angus heifers will be John and Jason Parravicini and family, RJ & G Parravicini, Harvey.
The Parravcini family will offer 28 Angus-Friesian heifers from their 190-head dairy.
The extremely quiet, owner-bred heifers are 16-20 months old and are sired by Winavon Angus bulls.
The draft shows good conformation and structure with plenty of softness and femininity.
First time vendors Steven & PJ D’Opera, D’Opera Farm, Tutanup, will be the biggest vendors of Angus heifers.
The operation has nominated 30 sweet, quiet Angus-Friesians in the 16-20mo age bracket.
The heifers were purchased in as young females from reputable dairies which do not run Jerseys.
Cookernup producers Ron and Nicole Parravicini, FE & PA Parravincini, will again be among the vendors in the Angus-Friesian heifer run with an offering of 20 owner-bred, heifers aged 16-20 months.
The quiet, well-grown heifers will not disappoint when it comes to their milk production and calf rearing ability.
They are sired by Mordallup Angus bulls.
Also offering a sizable draft of Angus-Friesian heifers will be P & T Duggan, Cowaramup, PG & MC Italiano, Harvey and Wild Dog Flats, Collie.
The Duggans have nominated 30 quality black, owner-bred heifers from their sizable dairy operation.
The Duggans normally have sold this annual draft of heifers in August but carried it over to be offered as future breeders in this sale.
The 14-16mo heifers are sired by Monterey Angus bulls.
The Italianos and Wild Dog Flats will both truck in 25 feminine black heifers.
The Italiano owner-bred line range in age from 10-16mo and are sired by Ardcairnie Angus bulls, while the line from Wild Dog Flats were purchased in as poddies and are 12-16mo.
As in previous years Murray Taylor, Uduc Brook Farms, Harvey, will again be the major vendor when it comes to heifers that aren’t black.
This year Uduc Brook Farms will offer 32 Murray Grey-Friesian heifers from its operation which is currently milking 250 Friesian based on Australian bloodlines.
The 16-20mo extremely quiet heifers are sired by Monterey and Young Guns Murray Grey bulls and out of Friesian heifers.
The operation will also offer three Angus-Friesian heifers aged 14-16mo.
Seventeen grey heifers will also be offered by BK Lindberg, Busselton, but these heifers are not out of Friesian cows.
They are out of Aussie Red milkers and sired by Monterey Murray Grey bulls.
Elders Nannup agent Terry Tarbotton said the 18-20mo heifers were a top line of future breeders and were bomb proof when it came to their temperaments.
The 14 Hereford-Friesian heifers on offer will be presented by KG & KM Tyrrell, Waterloo, which will also truck in six Angus-Friesian heifers.
Both lines are owner-bred and are 10-12mo.
Along with the quality lines of first-cross, unjoined heifers there will also be a good line-up of store cattle in what will be the company’s first store sale for the year at Boyanup.
Included in the store yarding will be dairy steers, first-cross steers, beef steers and heifers, plus a herd dispersal of quality Angus breeders.
A feature of the store offering will be the herd dispersal for Greg Crothers, GW Crothers, Nannup, who has leased the majority of his property as part of a transition into retirement.
The offering from Mr Crothers will consist of 80 Angus cows based on Diamond Tree/Gandy Angus bloodlines.

The offering of third to sixth calvers are PTIC to Gandy Angus bulls which were selected for their low to moderate birthweights and good growth.
The line is due to calve from February 19 to May 14.
Mr Tarbotton said the cows on offer in the dispersal from Mr Crothers were an excellent line of Angus matrons renowned for producing sought after replacement heifers and feeder/grazier cattle.
“We have always purchased good quality bulls for the herd and this certainly comes through when you look at the shape and size of cows plus the calves they produce,” Mr Tarbotton said.
“They are very quiet females and Mr Crothers has rarely pulled a calf.
“At weaning the steers usually weigh 360-380kg at 8-9mo.
“The majority of the steer calves in the past have been through our Boyanup sales to feedlots and grass fatteners while some were retained and run through to trade cattle and dressed at about 270kg when sold as yearlings.”
In the dairy steer line-up there will be a good range of steers to suit all buyers with the offering ranging in age from three to 24 months.
At the older end of offering Nannup operation Dudinalup Pastoral will be the biggest vendor and will kick the dairy steer run off when it offers 30 steers.
The well-grown steers are aged 22-24mo and were purchased in as small poddies by the operation and grown out.
Also offering numbers in the older age bracket will be T & S Deryuter, Nannup, with a line-up of 25 black and white steers (20-22mo) that were purchased in as younger cattle.
Jesmond Dairy, Rosa Brook, will also be among the bigger vendors in the Friesian steer line-up with its offering of 40 owner-bred Friesian steers aged 10-12mo.
Also in the 10-12mo age range, Hartville Downs Grazing, Margaret River, will present 30 steers and Dale Carter, has nominated 23 steers.
At the younger end of the age scale there will be some large lines presented from regular store sale vendors.
Tutunup operation Negus Enterprises, Tutunup, this month has nominated 40 steers aged 4-6mo,
Matching Negus Enterprises for numbers will be another regular vendor West & Haggerty, Capel, when it trucks in 40 steers aged 3-5mo.
Both lines of steers are owner-bred and have had all the work done, including being dehorned as well as their full vaccinations and vet treatments, meaning they are just waiting to go out in the paddock and grow.
Another large poddie line will come from WH & SE Mottershead, Witchcliffe, which will truck in 40 steers (4-6mo).
