A male Kelpie attracted $500 when he was auctioned off for charity at the first Mareeba cattle sale for the season on Tuesday.
Laurie and Julie Wright, Bimini Park Brangus and Working Kelpies, offered a choice of their litter to the winning bidder to raise funds for the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners.
Mr Wright said they had wanted to do their bit to help drought and fire affected producers, which is what sparked the idea to auction the pup.
While Mr Wright said he was a little disappointed with the price, he was pleased that people had also dug deep to provide donations to the cause.
Mr Wright said they would be taking four puppies from the same little to the auction, two male and two female, so the successful bidder could have their choice of dog.
"He made $500 which is a bit disappointing, but it is a sign of the times and all of the other charities around.
"But we got some good donations as well.
The winning bidder was Bill and Rose German from Hurricane Station at Mount Carbine, who chose a male pup named Bimini Titus to take home.
"They've got a lot of working dogs, so they'll use him in their mob," Mr Wright said.
"He comes from very good lines, so he will be a good worker."
The Wrights, who have been breeding working Kelpies for 30 years, said this would not be the last time they auctioned off a pup.
"It was the first time we'd done it but it won't be the last, that's for sure.
"I think it will become a regular thing when we have a litter of pups we will auction one off and donate to a good and worthwhile rural enterprise."
