Charters Towers combined agents yarded a total of 3496 cattle for Friday's store sale with a new record price set for weaner steers.
A large yarding of mixed store cattle drew spirited competition from lot feeders, fatteners and western backgrounders. The yarding consisted of 1518 steers, 432 mickeys, 1526 heifers and 20 cows and calves.
Store cattle represented a broad cross-section of northern cattle with lots coming from Mount Isa, Collinsville, Richmond, Hughenden, Georgetown, Mt Garnet, Mt Surprise, Forsayth, Tully, Malanda, local and coastal areas.
The cattle comprised of a number of large single vendor consignments as well as some smaller lots. Records tumbled in a market that was very strong throughout. The trend saw steers average 20c/kg dearer and heifers averaged 10c dearer than the previous week's rates.
The Condon family, Conjuboy Station, Mt Garnet, sold a line of 136 high grade Brahman No.0 weaner steers to set a new Charters Towers Saleyards record of 530c/kg. The line had an average weight of 181kg to average $960/head.
The Condon family also sold a pen of 29 high grade Brahman No.0 weaner heifers for 436.2c, weighing 196kg, to return $854.
A pen of 32 steers from RJ, JJ and SR Hyden made 388c, weighing 389kg, returning $1510/head.
A good pen of 16 heifers from Lowis Investment made 370c, weighing 358kg returning $1326. Nine cow and calf units sold by M Gibb, returned $1240/unit.
