ANOTHER strong weaner sale at Boyanup conducted by Elders and Nutrien Livestock saw a combined penning of 1472 cattle.
Overall values eased roughly $100 but with further investigation, a fair share of that was caused by average weights being over 20kg less than the previous week's sale.
MLA Reporting Service quoted weaner steers as down 20c/kg and heifers up 18c/kg, assessing the overall sale as close to equal.
Quality and weights again were excellent with lotfeeder buyers, grazier and background purchases the main supporters.
AuctionsPlus was connected but only made one purchase.
Steers topped at $2444 and 726c/kg with heifers reaching $2153 and 620c/kg.
According to this scribe's records, heifers lifted at the top price end by almost $200 and steers by $150.
The sale included the Charolais Society feature and breeders supported with quality calves.
The champion pen in Elders as well as second and third placings were all sired by Bardoo Charolais bulls and out of first cross cows bought at the Elders female sales at Boyanup.
Elders
Elders started the sale and the first pen of 10 Charolais weighing 459kg from Oakview Farm not only made top steer price but were judged the champion pen.
The steers were bought by Graeme Brown for Princess Royal Trading, South Australia, for $2444 at 532c/kg.
Saunders Beach sold eight steers of 428kg for $2303 and 538c/kg being the first of many pens bought by John Gallop, for Kalgrains, Wannamal.
Chris Waddingham, Nutrien Livestock, Capel, secured several pens for his lotfeeder client, starting with eight from CM & DJ Forrest, Capel, weighing 410kg to cost $2250 at 548c/kg.
A line of nine from Bowie Beef, Bridgetown, also went to Mr Waddingham at 572c/kg to cost $2161.
Elders, Boyanup was regularly written in the clerking sheets, starting with 11 Charolais from Oakview Farm costing $2230 and 566c/kg.
Phil Tognolini, Dardanup, sold his first 11 steers weighing 388kg for $2246 and another 12 making $2069 when Mr Waddingham bid to 578c/kg and 594c/kg respectively.
Harvey Beef snapped up its first pen of 11 steers from CA & SJ Jones, outlaying $2017 at 614c/kg for the steers weighing 328kg.
Another five weighing 326kg from Oakland Farm joined these at $2060 and 632c/kg.
The black cattle started with six pens from TJ Waugh, Manjimup, with the first line of 10 weighing 439kg selling to Princess Royal Trading for $2373 at 540c/kg.
The next four pens went to Elders, Boyanup for $2304, $2238, $2264 and $2085.
Yates Family Trust sold several pens of Black Simmentals to a top of $2256 bought for Kalgrains at 606c/kg and also sold the top of 664c/kg paid for 11 weighing 269kg bought by Cameron Harris, Elders, Manjimup.
Oakview Farm topped the heifers as well with a line of 11 weighing 406kg that sold at 530c/kg to make $2153, bought for Kalgrains, which went on to pay $2054 for 11 from Saunders Beach at 530c/kg.
Jig Grazing finally secured a pen of eight heifers from Oakland Farm, paying $2105 at 554c/kg for the 380kg females.
Mr Harris paid the top of 620c/kg for 182kg Murray Grey heifers sold account D Raper and J Winter.
Nutrien Livestock
Nutrien Livestock had the larger numbers by just four calves and started with seven Charolais from MF & MA Hutton, Capel, with Kalgrains adding these to the load at $2284 and 560c/kg.
John Ronzio sold his third-placed calves to Kalgrains with the 390kg steers making $2199 at 564c/kg.
Three pens from EB & G Quick, Donnybrook, saw their third pen take out the champion pen in the Nutrien Livestock catalogue and sold to Jock Embry, Nutrien Livestock, Margaret River/Busselton, for $2103 and 612c/kg.
The other pens made $2179 and $2105 when bought by Mr Embry and Mr Browne respectively.
Vendors with numbers included McIntyre Farms with five pens all making from 612c/kg to 630c/kg to top at $2227 for 10 weighing 364kg bought by Melrose Enterprises, Donnybrook.
Hampden Farm, Donnybrook, also sold seven pens of Murray Grey steers that reached $2215 bought for Kalgrains at 610c/kg.
Lighter weights of these topped at 684c/kg, going to Brad McDonnell, Elders, Manjimup.
Avoca Dairy saw their 11 Angus of 372kg make $2227 when Elders, Boyanup, bid to 598c/kg for the 372kg calves, with Harvey Beef buyng the next 11 for $1930 at 620c/kg.
Kelly-Brae, Gelorup, sold eight Angus of 341kg to Elders, Boyanup, when the 341kg steers made $2149 and 630c/kg.
Mr Embry took the next pen of 11 weighing 291kg for $1961 and 672c/kg.
D & JM Walters, Busselton, sold two pens of Angus weighing 318kg to cost Harvey Beef $2039 and $2016.
Later the Walters sold the top price of 726c/kg with 11 steers weighing 262kg and were the only pen bought by AuctionsPlus to cost $1904.
Ralph Maiolo, Coolup, had calves at the sale and topped at $2208 when Mr Browne paid 600c/kg for the 368kg steers.
Six Charolais heifers weighing 389kg from MF & MA Hutton, Capel, topped the female section for Nutrien Livestock when Kalgrains were named as buyers at 542c/kg and $2109.
Elders, Boyanup then paid $2054 for nine sold by Mr Ronzio, bidding to 536c/kg for the 383kg cattle before Richard Pollock, Nutrien Livestock, Waroona, took the next line of Ronzio heifers at 530c/kg.
Several pens from RJ & FJ Nancarrow, Pinjarra, sold to 512c/kg.
The top of 580c/kg was paid by Mr Pollock for 11 heifers sold by Buckingham Beef with the 331kg heifers costing $1924.
What the agent said:
ELDERS auctioneer and Margaret River agent Alec Williams said numbers were down on the previous sale by 600 head, with 1470 weaners sold.
"A good quality yarding was once again offered with the Charolais breed being the feature for this fixture," Mr Williams said.
"Good support from lotfeeders and graziers saw values similar to the previous sale for heifers with the steer section easing in value by up to 20c/kg in places, but still solid.
"Overall it was a good result considering the volume of cattle throughout the State being presented for sale at this time of the year."
