WASTE management company SITA announced last Tuesday via its website it had lodged a referral document with the Western Australia Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for a proposed landfill site 18 kilometres west of York.
SITA WA State general manager Nial Stock said the lodgement was an important first step in obtaining the appropriate approvals.
"SITA is pleased to take the next step towards developing this essential infrastructure which will contribute towards the overall sustainable waste management solution for Perth and surrounding regions," Mr Stock said.
Avon Valley Residents Association chairman Keith Schekkerman said the group has been in contact with SITA and is keen to get a hold of the document as soon as possible.
"So far we have been unsuccessful," Mr Schekkerman said. "We've been told to wait until the EPA publishes it."
The referral document will be considered by regulators who have 28 days to make their assessment.
Subject to obtaining approvals, it is anticipated the facility would be operational in 2014 or 2015.
