THE Grass Valley Hall’s Great War honour roll has been restored in the hope of lasting another 100 years.
Shane Hayward and Avon Clarke from Northam Joinery undertook a complete restoration.
Mr Clarke said it took 50 to 60 hours of work.
“It was a job and a half putting it all together with it all in pieces,” he said.
“We replaced the centre boards due to splits.
“The names were buffed and given a coat of lacquer, along with the board itself.”
The names were placed in the exact same order with photographs taken prior to the restoration.
Dots placed next to names signify a soldier was killed in action.
Grass Valley local Richard Brazier said even with a Saluting Their Service commemorative grant from the
Department of Veteran Affairs, the project went over budget.
“However ,Northam Joinery gave us a significant discount which we are thankful for,” he said.
“The honour roll was in such a bad condition and we wanted it refurbished for the Anzac centenary.
“There isn’t an exact date of when the board was originally installed, however we do know it was presented by Frederick Richard Walsh.”
Mr Brazier hoped to get in touch with people who are related to the men on the honour board.
“There are lots of old names on that board that are easily recognised,” he said.
Two men related to the names are Gerard Sermon and Malcolm Christmass.
Mr Sermon is related to Harold, Selby and Frank Sermon, with Mr Christmass related to Alfred James Christmass, Syd, Albert and P Christmass.
The honour roll will play a key part in Grass Valley’s Anzac service on April 25.
It will commence 9am at Grass Valley Memorial Park with a service, followed by a march to the Grass Valley Hall where the honour roll will be commemorated.
Afterwards a gunfire breakfast will be served.
