YOU may have noticed the new rubbish bins on Fitzgerald Street.
The bins are covered in historical photographs of Northam which mostly correspond with a particular bin’s location.
The images were chosen by Northam Visitor Centre manager Victoria Jones and sourced from a locally run Facebook page called Lost Northam.
Established in 2013, Lost Northam’s aim is to relive memories of town by posting any old photos or videos people may have.
Anyone who uploads onto the page authorises the administrator to use, edit, reproduce or publish photographs or video without compensation.
Some images were also taken from the State library and the Shire of Northam’s own archives.
Ms Jones said she was pleased with the end result.
“It took a couple of weeks to do,” she said.
“I think they have been well received and are getting people talking.”
Information on a bin explains on what is seen in each photo, with pedestrians able to see how a location used to look.
“There is a focus on Northam’s heritage, especially with the success of the Lost Northam page,” she said.
“We will look at what else we can do to promote heritage.
“It’s important we use it and that it’s preserved.”
Ms Jones said bus and walking tours had also been revamped with additional information on local sites around town.
