THE Cunderdin Agricultural College is holding an open day on Friday, September 9.
The event kicks off at 10am with all areas of the college on display including classrooms, the trade training centre and farm and residential areas.
Current college students will have the opportunity to speak to university representatives from all over Western Australia to discuss future career options in the agricultural industry.
A group of current students won the WA State Agricultural School Sheep Handling Challenge in Katanning last month, winning the title from Harvey Agricultural School by 45 points.
The group competed in prime lamb judging, wool handling, Merino assessment and shearing.
The winning group included Kaiden Johnston (Quairading), Rory Jonas (Wyalkatchem), Inaya Stone and Ben Liddelow (Esperance), Bailey McDonnell and Dylan Parkhouse (Kellerberrin), Shannon McLean (Moora) and Jayden Smith (Cranbrook).
Students also won individual events on the day.
Shannon McLean came first in the novice shearing, Dylan Parkhouse placed first in the Poll Dorset judging and Kaiden Johnston came second.
A Cunderdin student also won the People’s Choice Award at the WA Wood Show in Claremont last month.
Morgan Ashworth (Kalannie) was presented the award for his original marri spiral table, which also placed first in the “Out of the Woods” fine woodwork category.
Fellow student Daniel Hancock (Kellerberrin) came second with his jarrah coffee table and William Schorer (Wandering) received a commendation for his jarrah coffee table design.
Recent student achievements will be showcased at the open day, and awards will be presented under two categories; People’s Choice and Technically Sound
The day will be filled with fun interactive activities including a shearing and wool-handling competition, meat cutting demonstrations, tastings and a machine parade at lunchtime.
Visitors will also have a chance to watch students train cattle for the led steer competition in this year’s Royal Show.
Teachers will be hosting tours of the farm for prospective students and parents, leaving every half an hour by bus.
Principal Bernard Beatty said about 550 people attended last year and he hopes for a similar turnout this time.
“It was a great event last year and we hope to get as many people as possible along to see what our school has to offer.”
Lunch will be available from 12pm to 1.30pm and the school will be open until 3pm.
