ANOTHER end-of-year novelty event was held last Saturday – the annual North vs South matchplay.
This event divides the club into two teams, those who live north of the river and those who live south. It is common knowledge that the best marathon runners come from the African continent, the best rally drivers come from Finland and the best golfers live south of the Avon river. Still those players who are disadvantaged by living in a geographical area that produces poor performing golfers, do have the right every year to contest this event.
If you look at the Guinness book of records for the team with the most successive wins, you would be surprised to see it’s not the Harlem Globetrotters but the Northam Souths team. For as long as records have been kept, the Souths have won each year. Perhaps its living further away from the equator, having better television reception or a more relaxed lifestyle, you cannot argue the facts, golfers living north of the river should resign themselves to give away the clubs and perhaps take up bowls.

- Don Bates
The winners were: Geoff Hall (South) defeated Daniel Negus (North), Bruce Smart (South) defeated Les Lee (North), Bruce Smart (South) tied with Ron Pitts (North), George Day (North) defeated Max Hubble (South), Rob Lucy (North) defeated Don Bates (South).
Due to the end result being a tie the match decider came down to a putt off between Bruce Smart and Ron Pitts. The end result, another win for the Souths side.
A suggestion was made that the event be changed to the Rest of the World vs South to assist the poorly performing North side with a few more options for players.
Upcoming events:
Saturday, September 24 stableford event; September 25 par event; October 1 stableford morning round followed by the grand final on television on October 2 stableford.
