The Federal football club travelled to York in what could only be described as perfect weather conditions to pit their strength against the York Roos. A large crowd were in attendance to witness proceedings.
Reserves
The reserves team lead by playing coach Steve Rakowski were keen to make a statement after being soundly beaten by York in the 2016 grand final.
With a few reserve players having to step up to the league side due to players being injured and other commitments it was time to call upon the club’s much younger brigade, six in all (orange short) players took to the field for their first game of senior football for the club.
As the game progressed it was plain to see that as each quarter of football passed the very warm conditions were starting to take effect on some of the players and this is when this young group of players took control of the game and aided by the senior players overpowered the York Roos to run out comfortable winners.
Federal 14.11 (95) to York 5.6 (36)
League
The league game started at a cracking pace with both sides trying to take early control of the game. Coach Alistair Smith left the field early for treatment as a result of a heavy clash and players of both sides were desperate to maintain the ascendancy and gain the vital four points.
After the long break both sides returned to the field in what could only be described as very smokey conditions (from burning off) and it was difficult at times to see the play clearly.
Federal players started to gain the upper hand against a determined York side and with their back six players gaining control and pushing the ball forward this created goal front opportunities
The final quarter saw federal gain momentum and led brilliantly all day by James Smith were finally able to break free from York to record a convincing win.
Federal 22.18 (150) to York 10.5 (65)
