SEEDING operations are progressing well on Terry and Andrea Reynolds farm at Miling.
Son Sam – who returned to the family farm full time two years ago – said about a third of the cropping program was in the ground by last week.
After an April 18 start to seeding the team was finishing its GM canola planting before moving on to Triazine Tolerant (TT) varieties.
About a fifth of the Reynolds’ cropping program is being planted to canola this year, another fifth is to lupins and the remainder to wheat.
Lupin varieties of choice included Gunyidi and Jurien, while wheat varieties were Calingiri, Mace and potentially Wyalkatchem.
“Calingiri last year was our best stuff by far,” Sam said.
“We were quite frost-affected, especially through the Mace.”
The program was being sown dry, with no rain on the property since March.
Sam said they had received about 160 millimetres of rain so far this year and was hoping rain forecast in the next week would eventuate to break the season.
“We’ve got a lot of subsoil moisture through the heavier country but it’s pretty dry out north,” he said.
“We might have a bit of a break after the canola and reassess things, even potentially leaving a little bit out, but we’ll see how rotations work.
“We’re not going to be trying to break any records with the speed we put it in at the moment so we’re sort of taking it easy and waiting for the season to play out a little bit.
“We’ve got two machines so we’ve only been working from about 7am until 8pm, it has got to go in but there’s no pressure at the moment, we won’t go around the clock.”
