The Shire of Goomalling has won the Young People Making a Difference in Communities category at the 2017 Local Government Children’s Environment and Health Policy Awards.
The awards showcase local government’s progress in creating environments that protect and support the health of children.
Goomalling’s Bike Rescue program received top honours. The program gave young people the opportunity to restore an old bike, giving children ownership and pride with the bicycle for their hard work.
The Council developed the ‘Gooma Squad’, a group of young people to help engage young people in planning for a youth friendly community.
Director of The Public Health Advocacy Institute, Dr Melissa Stoneham highlighted the importance of local council.
“They care about communities and people,” she said.
“Children are an important part of any community, and they are our future.”
