Thirty-five years on from a tour of south-east Asia, swimmers from various clubs attached to the Central Midlands are planning a reunion.
In 1983 swim team manager Shirley Stephen and chaperone Margaret Slater took a group of swimmers to Asia for a series of swim meets.
The tour began with a meet against Singapore Swimming Club on Decemeber 4, 1983.
The WA team took out 20 of the 48 gold medals on the programme.
Shirley Stephen said the hospitality shown by the visited club was overwhelming.
“Singapore Club entertained us to a nine course banquet after the swim and there was an exchange of gifts,” she said.
“In all this was the most memorable era for swimming.”
The group also swam at Penang on December 11, 1983 to coincide with the opening of the Pesta Penang Swimming Complex which affiliates eleven clubs in Penang.
The carnivals at Bettersworth Air Force Base and Kuala Lumpur were friendly swims with no medals being awarded.
Members of the Northam club were Graema, Grant and Moira Slater, Daryl Stephen, Diane Troup, Karen Tucker, Rupert Sewell and Stephen Fidge from York with swimmers from all over Western Australia.
The reunion set for March this year has been postponed to April 2019 to give members from overseas time to organise a schedule to allow them to attend.
