Last weekend was another full weekend of golfing fixtures at the Northam Golf Course.
A combination of the wet and windy weather and stroke being the competition for both rounds; for some it was going to be a long weekend.
Saturday’s event was the Gillett Putter sponsored by Sportspower Northam, in conjunction with the Gillett Putter the Veterans trophy is also contested, an event for over 55’s sponsored by Steve’s Hair Care.
A good field of 25 players vied for the honour of winning the Gillett Putter trophy and having their name on the winners board in the clubroom.
The day started in fine weather but by the end of the round the wind was playing its part in sorting out the good golfers from the rest.
One golfer, Max Hubble, was finding the conditions a breeze; rarely straying from the fairways and reading the greens like a pro Hubble parred holes 1, 3, 6 and 12 to amass a score of 91, nett 70 to win the Gillett Putter.
Runner-up in the Gillett Putter was club president Chadd Hunt with a score of a nett 72.
The veterans trophy is one event that gets larger fields each year, due to the ageing of the playing group. Only six of the 25 players were under age 55.
Showing great consistency over the past few weeks Bruce Smart again dominated most of the field with pars on holes 3, 7, 15 and 18 with a score of 92, nett 74 to win the veterans trophy. Runner-up in the veterans trophy went to Neil James on a countback, also with a nett 74.
Elders Insurance novelty winners: No. 5 longest putt Roger Podmore; No. 9 nearest the pin Peter Oliver; No. 13 best second shot (Money Hole) Rick Kennedy; No. 11 longest putt Cameron Stewart.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Sunday’s event was the second round of the Club Championships sponsored by Avon Waste. As the Championships are run over four events it is important to get a couple of good scores early to put pressure on the other players.
A hearty group of golfers confronted a wild and wet day all wanting to get a good score to add to their championship tally, it was man versus weather and the weather won hands down.
Scores were not pretty, however the best of a bedraggled lot was Matt Woods.
