DONATED bales of WA Merino fleeces last week raised $3284.40 to help keep the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) in the air.
Dyson Jones Wool put two bales up for auction at the Western Wool Centre (WWC) on Wednesday with the sale proceeds donated to Australian Wool Network's annual fundraiser for the RFDS.
Techwool Trading's buyer at the WWC, Russell Fraser, bid up to 20 per cent over the odds to see off other bidders and claim the wool, surpassing last year's donation by $156.85.
He bid to 920 cents a kilogram greasy for the wool in a strong market, coming back after a week with no sale and playing catch up to Melbourne and Sydney markets.
Dyson Jones state manager Peter Howie said the donated 20.6 micron, 92 millimetre staple length fleece with 39N/kt strength and 63.5 per cent yield was in the most sought-after bracket of mid-micron wools which experienced the biggest price gain on the second last auction day of the season.
"We've been doing this (donating wool to the RFDS) for about seven years now and Dyson Jones is happy to do it because it is for such a good cause that looks after our clients and people in regional areas," Mr Howie said.
Mr Fraser said Techwool Trading was also happy to contribute.
"We always like to support the Royal Flying Doctors Service because it is such a worthy cause," he said.
"We buy the RFDS wool most years but last year we were outbid by Chinatex, but we've got it back again this year."
Australian Wool Network donated two bales of wool to each of the week 52 sales the previous week at Melbourne and Sydney, plus an extra bale was donated by a South Australian client, with proceeds also going to the RFDS.
It has been raising funds for the RFDS by selling donated wool since 2002.
The wool market ended the 2015-16 season at the WWC on Thursday last week on a very positive note.
The Western Indicator finished the season at 1393c/kg clean, 106c above where it had started 12 months ago.
Mid and broader microns led the way on the final trading day with PJ Morris, West Coast Wools and Techwool Trading the main buyers of the small 2574-bale offering.
Main China wool buyer, Chinatex, did not feature near the top of the Australian Wool Exchange's buyers list for the last week of the season.
