THE last Elders store cattle sale for 2018 will be held on Friday, December 21 at 1.30pm and shouldn’t be missed.
There will be an outstanding offering of 1200 cattle coming in for the sale with 601 Friesian steers making up the majority of the yarding.
Approximately 168 first-cross Angus and Murray Grey steers will be available as well as 91 first-cross Angus heifers, while a feature will be the quality dispersal of mainly first-cross females ranging in age from two to six years old.
Elders South West livestock manager Michael Carroll said with a good finish to the spring period, it was a great time to purchase store cattle.
“Dominating the pens this month will be Friesian steers, with a good selection of heavier liveweights and young poddies,” he said.
“We also have a good assortment of Angus-Friesian steers for those who prefer the beef cross but still require bucket-reared cattle that are quiet.
“Featuring in the sale is a variety of dispersal cows which will be mostly first-cross and are younger to mature age types ideal for those who need replacements.”
George Ipsen, Mayfield Park Farms, has decided to disperse his breeding herd of predominantly first-cross Angus-Friesian breeders to concentrate on his family’s extensive avocado operations in the Manjimup and Pemberton regions.
The complete herd dispersal consists of approximately 60 Angus-Friesians and 12 Angus breeders which are PTIC to Diamond Tree and Monterey Angus bulls and are due to calve from February 1 to May 5.
The offering will consist of second, third and fourth calvers and mature aged cows, which have been inspected for udder and structural soundness.
The Ipsens have been in the cattle business for more than 70 years, of which 40 included running an Angus stud and in the last 20 years they have run a commercial herd of Angus-Friesian females mated to Angus bulls.
These females have been turning off 200 to 260 kilogram baby beef at 10-months-old predominantly to Woolworths.
A line of mixed-sex baby beef sold to Woolworths on November 11 averaged a dressed weight of 250kg.
Mr Ipsen said he buys replacement breeders at the Elders Boyanup Supreme Springing Heifer sales each year, with an emphasis placed on quality rather than price and selecting from the first run of mated heifers on offer.
“Potential purchasers can buy with confidence given these cows are proven breeders, unlikely to have calving issues, with heavy turn off weights demonstrated from our recent Woolworth sales,” he said.
An opportunity to purchase a small, proven herd of PTIC first-cross females from Michael and Sophia Giumelli, JP Giumelli & Son, Benger, will also be up for the taking.
The 24 Angus-Friesians and six Angus-Jersey second to sixth calvers come from a productive 340 head dairy herd and are in calf to a Little Meadows Angus sire.
They have a tight eight-week calving period from February 17 to April 13 and have been regularly drenched and given a Multimin injection.
Elders Boyanup agent Mal Barrett said the Giumelli family will have a small herd of quality first-cross females up for sale.
“They’ve run alongside their dairy business but simply don’t fit into their program moving forward,” he said.
“A large percentage of calves off these cows are sold annually for slaughter.
“The females are ideal as top up breeders for any herd.”
GB & SM Varis, Bowelling, will put forward their annual draft of Yallaroo-sired purebred Hereford calves.
The 45 steers and 20 heifers are seven to eight-month-old and expected to average 280-320kg. They will have been weaned for a two-week period come sale day.
From a herd of 80 females, the very quiet calves have been recently backlined and have the potential to grow out well to suit lotfeeders and backgrounders.
LJ & DV Gillies, Dardanup, have 10 Murray Grey steers up for grabs that are 14-16mo, while Dansinup Grazing, Busselton, will offer 10 mixed-sex Red Angus weaners that are aged 12-14mo.
Black and white steers are the feature of the sale and a large consignment of 50 head at 6-10mo will come from First Australian Farmland.
Peninsula Downs, Warner Glen, will truck in 50 Friesian-Jersey crosses at 6-8mo, while Negus Enterprises, Tutunup, will see 40 Friesian poddies calves at 4-6mo go under the hammer.
Thirty quality black and whites aged 22-24mo will start the day’s selling when offered by Dudinalup Pastoral, Nannup, while penned alongside them will be 14 head of a similar age offered by G & M Palandri, Cowaramup.
