LOOKING for quality weaned beef calves to kick off the new year?
Then make sure you get to the Boyanup saleyards next week for the first Elders weaner sale of 2019.
The sale will be held on Wednesday, January 16, commencing at 1pm and the Elders South West network is expecting to yard 700 beef weaners.
British Breeds, mainly Angus and Murray Grey, will make up a majority of the breeding with some Euro sired calves penned, mainly Charolais and Black Simmental.
With a range of weights available, there will be young cattle to suit most requirements.
Buyers can rest assured the hard work has been done by the sale’s astute vendors, with all calves weaned for a minimum of 14 days and ready to hit the feedlot or paddock.
Elders South West livestock manager Michael Carroll said there were quality drafts of cattle nominated for the sale.
“This is the first Elders weaner sale for 2019 and we will yard 700 head of mostly Angus and Murray Greys,” Mr Carroll said.
“As always the weaners have been weaned for a minimum 14 days and are a credit to the vendors, we have some really well-bred weaners coming in.
“The sale is a good opportunity to fill either paddocks or pens with weaners that will mostly weigh from 250-350 kilograms and average just over the 300kg mark.”
Yates Family Trust will be among the sale’s volume vendors with a draft of 70 Black Simmental cross heifer weaners from the family’s Collie and Allison properties.
The well-grown and soft weaners are sired by Bonnydale Black Simmental bulls and out of Angus cows purchased as mated heifers at local South West female sales.
The eight to nine-month-old calves have been vaccinated twice with 5in1 and were last drenched in August and Elders Brunswick representative Alex Roberts expects them to weigh from 320kg to 360kg.
Regular sale vendors the Russell family’s Callanish Grazing, Thompsons Brook, will offer 45 Angus weaners.
The draft will consist of 30 heifers and 15 steers and were bred on the Russell family’s Callanish Angus breeding.
The end of March to end of April drop calves were yard weaned in mid-November and Elders Boyanup agent Mal Barrett estimates them to weigh from 240kg to 300kg.
Wilga producer RF & RE Walker will offer 30 Angus steers at the sale.
The seven to eight-month-old calves were weaned on December 6 and are AI-bred and based on Koojan Hills and Ardcairnie Angus bloodlines.
Mr Barrett said the Walker’s calves were estimated to average 250-260kg going on their recent sale weights.
G & RM Telini, Dardanup, has nominated 30 February-drop Angus-Limousin cross heifer weaners and Mr Barrett expects them to weigh from 280-330kg.
The heifers are sired by Angus-Limousin bulls and out of Angus and Murray Grey cows.
The Angus bloodlines used in the herd are Monterey and Diamond Tree while the Limousin goes back to the Burnside stud.
The line was yard weaned on November 5 and has had a single 5in1 treatment plus Cydectin at weaning.
Rosa Brook graziers GJ & KL Cain will offer 21 Angus steer weaners at the sale.
Elders Margaret River agent Alec Williams said several of the calves were from an AI program and based on bloodlines such as popular AI sire S Chisum 6175.
The calves have been weaned for six weeks and weighed 380kg to 410kg last week.
They received a 7in1 in November and were backlined and given Multimin and B12 in December.
PJ Reading, Binningup, will offer 35 mixed sex Murray Grey weaners bred on Monterey bloodlines.
The straight bred draft will consist of 18 steers and 17 heifers and Mr Roberts said being at the lighter end, the Reading draft were ideal backgrounding cattle.
Other weaners coming in from Mr Robert’s clients include Collie producers DG & TM Anderton and M & C Mills.
The Anderton family will offer 16 mixed sex Murray Grey weaners bred on bulls from the Young Guns stud, Hyden, while the Mills family has nominated 10 mixed sex Angus weaners bred on Diamond Tree bloodlines.
Mr Roberts said the Mills cattle were extremely quiet and estimates them to average 350kg.
Some of the other bigger drafts of weaners include Tandar, Busselton, with 40 mixed sex Charolais cross weaners, Romarie, Darkan, 37 mixed sex Angus-Simmental cross weaners, F Filipone, Manjimup, 36 mixed Angus weaners and CM & DJ Forrest, Capel, 34 mixed sex Charolais steer weaners.
