WA cattle fanatics, producers and eager student competitors should look no further than this year's Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Challenge Field Day, which will incorporate the Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Schools Challenge.
The event will be held at Willyung Farms feedlot, Albany, on Wednesday, March 27.
This year's challenge marks the 10th year of competition and the Gate 2 Plate committee encourages prospective attendees to take advantage of the free entry being offered this year and the door prizes on offer for early registrations.
The day is due to kick off at 9am, with the first hour of presentations dedicated to educating students, before eight teams from five schools will compete for $1000 prize money to be announced on the day.
The field day will open at 10am, with Bendigo Bank offering a generous morning tea from 10.30am.
The Gate 2 Plate committee has themed it's field day on Pastures for Profit.
"We have various presenters from different aspects of that theme to present as a panel with a Q&A at the end," Gate 2 Plate co-ordinator Narelle Lyon said.
The guest panel will include Elders Livestock production specialist Tiarna Wallinger, local producer Bevan Ravenhill and representatives from both Cattle Council Australia and Harvest Road, as well as other industry representatives presenting to the students attending the schools challenge.
"We will have trade displays, tractor driving opportunities, the panel presentation and additional presentations provided to the students, which all attendees can be involved in," Ms Lyon said.
"We have incorporated the schools challenge with the field day for 2024 to give the students a more informative day based on agriculture.
"They have more opportunities to network with stakeholders within the ag industry.
"All attendees will get a taste of what the students are learning and their involvement in the industry, which is a win for everyone."
Also during the field day attendees will be able to inspect this year's charity steer which has been generously donated by Wayne and Evonne Mitchell, Mountain Valley Livestock, Albany.
John Wayne 'The Duke', a Brangus steer (by a Brahman bull and out of an Angus cow), will be processed by Harvey Beef after being on feed for approximately 100 days at Willyung Farms, free of charge.
Four premium product packs from the charity steer will be auctioned at the 2024 Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Challenge Gala Awards Presentation and Dinner, on Friday, May 24, at Retravision Stadium, Albany.
The proceeds from the four auctioned packages will go towards Dolly's Dream, McGrath Foundation, Careflight and Blazeaid, which were selected by the Mitchell family.
