ADVERTISING FEATURE Across the bridge from Comur Street, on the north side of the Yass River, lie a lot of essential or convenient services, schools, multiple recreational facilities, community groups and many residences. The scenery also changes to farming pastures even before you get to the Hume Highway or the Sydney to Melbourne railway line. In terms of education, and the nearest thing to the bridge that runs from Comur Street to Laidlaw Street, is the town’s oldest school. Yass Public School opened in January 1879 under the charge of Mr James Brierly.  In 2007, Yass Public School won the NSW Department of Education and Training Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. The north side of Yass is also home to the mid-size rural comprehensive Yass High School. It serves not only the nearby residents, but much of the surrounding region. This part of town has many sporting and recreation facilities too, from Victoria Park’s oval to the War Memorial swimming pool.  There is also an off-leash dog park to enjoy, a skate park to have fun practising tricks, and some nice little reserves to relax in. You might join organisations like the Yass Valley Men’s Shed or the Yass Community Baptist Church.  The Men’s Shed “is about men feeling useful and contributing to their communities, learning or sharing their skills, making friends, networking and availing themselves of health information programs and opportunities.” The needs of many older residents are also met in this part of the town.  Warmington Lodge was opened on November 16, 1979 by the Governor General Sir Zelman Cowan. It is currently an ageing-on-site facility. Horton House is a charitable, not for profit organisation, which was made possible by Elsie Horton when she passed on in 1982. Miss Horton’s bequest covered some of the project cost and the nursing home opened on September 26, 1992. Thomas Eccles Gardens is a living community for 82 seniors who are provided with residential nurses and care assistants.  It is designed for people who need medical/rehabilitative care, restorative care and dementia care.
